This Weekends Karaoke

Whew!! What a week-end!!

Friday night at the Black River Legion we had a great show with a full house once again. All our regulars showed up, and a few new voices/faces as well. It went very well, and we stayed longer than normal to please the crowd.

A few of the girls had a wild night of tequila shots. I won't mention any names.. LOL.

Saturday night at the Watertown American Legion was a packed house as well. We had a steady rotation of singers the entire night. Some of the singers included, Doc Pete, Pat, Diane, Bob, Lisa, Chris, Loretta, Maggie, Ginny, Bobbie, Renee, Sherry, Sue, Dina, Deb, Peggy, and Don.

A fun time was had by all... and there was lots of dancing on the dance floor throughout the night.

Underwood & Travis Duet

Arista Records decided to release this as a duet to radio stations. Carrie and Randy performed it live for the very first time on American Idol, March 18th. The original version on her "Carnival Ride" CD does not include the duet vocals. Randy had a number one of the song in 1988, and it is also the title of his newest "hits" package being released this Spring.

Little Jimmy Boyd Passes

Jimmy Boyd, a singer best known for recording the Christmas novelty hit "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" in 1952 when he was 13, died Saturday. He was 70.

Mr. Boyd, who also was a child actor, died of cancer at a Santa Monica convalescent hospital, said Eleanor Pillsbury, his longtime friend.
Three weeks after the yuletide kiss-and-tell was released, the song was No. 1 on the Billboard charts, selling 2 million records in fewer than 10 weeks. Tens of millions of copies of the much-covered song written by Tommie Connors have been sold over the decades, according to the Allmusic Internet database.

It has been interpreted by artists including the Jackson Five, John Mellencamp and Amy Winehouse. Molly Bee was also 13 when she had a hit warbling about the unlikely pair kissing "underneath the mistletoe last night." Bee died last month at 69.
Although it came to be regarded as a holiday classic, the ditty about a child who can't understand why Mommy is cheating on Daddy with Santa Claus caused controversy in some quarters when the original featuring Mr. Boyd's childish treble was released.

The Catholic Church condemned the song for implying even a tenuous link between sex and the religious holiday, and record stations in several markets banned it. The ban was lifted only after the 13-year-old Boyd appeared before church leaders to talk about the lyrics.
Recorded at the urging of Columbia record executive Mitch Miller, the tune made "something of an overnight national musical figure" of the vocalist, a "freckle-patch" who lived in Van Nuys, Time magazine reported in 1952.
Lyrics such as "She didn't see me creep/ Down the stairs to have a peep" weren't "quite up to the title-line," the magazine had huffed. Even the young singer was surprised by the song's success.
"I like it personally," Mr. Boyd told Time, "but I didn't think anyone would buy it."
He was born dirt poor in a shack in McComb, Miss., on Jan. 9, 1939. His father, Leslie, was a carpenter from a big musical family - Mr. Boyd's grandfather was known in Mississippi as Fiddler Bill and had 21 children, Pillsbury confirmed.
At 4, Mr. Boyd started playing the guitar while growing up in Riverside. While at a country-western dance in a barn, the 7-year-old was called onstage to sing with Texas Jim Lewis' troupe. Mr. Boyd soon was appearing regularly with the band in shows that were broadcast on the radio.
After winning a local TV talent contest, Mr. Boyd appeared on "The Frank Sinatra Show" and was signed to a recording contract with Columbia. His first recording success was with a country song, "(The Angels Are Lighting) God's Little Candles."

His recording career would last until 1967 and encompass hits including "Dennis the Menace," sung with Rosemary Clooney, and several duets with Frankie Laine, including "The Little Boy and the Old Man," "Poor Little Piggy Bank" and "Tell Me a Story."
On television, Mr. Boyd made several appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in the early 1950s and moved into acting. From 1958 to 1961, he portrayed Howard Meechim, the high school boyfriend on "Bachelor Father," a sitcom that starred John Forsythe and Noreen Corcoran. He also played the teenage nephew of Betty White's character on "Date With the Angels," a late 1950s sitcom.

In 1960, Mr. Boyd appeared as a biology student in "Inherit the Wind" with Spencer Tracy and married Yvonne Craig, an actress he met while making the Bing Crosby film "High Time." Craig would go on to play Batgirl in the late 1960s TV series "Batman," but their marriage ended after two years.
Soon after marrying, Mr. Boyd was drafted into the Army and later performed in two USO shows in Vietnam.

Singers Rotation

At Thank God It's Karaoke, we pride ourselves on professionalism and service. As singers ourselves, we understand the importance of a good night out for karaoke.

A singer "rotation" is required to implement and enhance the fairness of the singers and the show. Keeping track of who is to perform in order is not an exact science, and varies from show to show.

We use the standard method of "first to request" gets the first line in spot, and those following are placed in order of the time they place their song request slip in. However, this method can only be used exactly, with no problems, if no new performers wish to sing throughout the night, or nobody puts in a slip to sing a duet song...

So... here is an example;

We have 4 singers who all put song requests in. Billy, Jack, Jill, and Susie. Billy would sing first, then Jack, then Jill, and followed by Susie. This would continue as a four person rotation.

Well... here comes Ted. He wants to sing. He has sat through 2 rotations already of Billy, Jack, Jill & Susie singing two different songs. He places his slip in to request his song. Now should Ted have to wait and follow Susie? Now we have a five person rotation. But wait... Jack & Jill put 2 different slips in to sing together, as a duet.

Does Ted have to sit through all four singers, then also the duet of Jack & Jill before he gets to sing again? And now Mary wants to sing as well, so she puts her song slip in. However, Susie has not put in a new slip since she last sang.

Still with me? LOL. In fairness to all, since Susie has not put in any new requests, she is dropped from the current rotation and filled in with Mary. Also, on the duet slip, whichever singer is coming up first in the rotation will take the count for the duet; and the same singer will not perform two times when someone else has not had the chance to sing one time. This is how the original roation gets split up.

Just because you followed Jack for three songs, does not mean you are going to be following Jack each rotation of the night. Singers come, singers leave, requests are placed for duet or group songs, and some singers only want to sing once or twice a night. While we try to follow a strict 1,2,3 method, that can not always be achieved for a smooth show.

Keep in mind, if the last 5 or so performers have done ballad or slow songs, we may need to shuffle the rotation slightly to pick up the tempo of the room.

Karaoke night is for fun. We want you all to sing.. :)

Saturday Nights Show

Saturday 3/14 at the Watertown VFW was a LOT of fun!! We had another huge turnout, with wall-to-wall singing from 8 till 12:30 AM.

I played a few Irish songs at the start and near the end of the night, but aside from "Whiskey In The Jar" most of the guests just wanted to sing country and popular tunes...

Just some of the great performances; Penny on "The Pill," Diane with "Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad," Steve & Lisa on "You And I," Ginny on "Help Me Make It Through The Night," Pat on "Hang On Sloopy," & "Brown Eyed Girl," Herb on "Loving Her Was Easier", and "The Gambler."

Bob performed "How Do You Like Me Now," Bobbie sang "Landslide," and Jeff did "What Do You Think About That."

Maggie did her famous "Goodbye Earl," and she and Diane did a nice duet of "When You Love Someone Like That." Rosie got up to sing "The Rose, " and Lisa did a beautiful job on "Black Horse and Cherry Tree." Of course, there were lots of other songs & singers.. Melvin and Corrina danced to almost every song played & performed.. Don't know where they get the energy!

Hank Locklin Dies

Grand Ole Opry member Hank Locklin, one of the greatest and most influential tenor singers in country music history, died Sunday at his home in Brewton, Ala.
He was 91 years old.

Mr. Locklin was a Grand Ole Opry member since 1960,
and had recently released his 65th album, By the Grace of God.Mr. Locklin's greatest hits included "Send Me The Pillow That You Dream On", "Jealous Heart" and "Please Help Me I'm Falling."
His style was a lynchpin of the much-vaunted "Nashille Sound,"
and he was an international ambassador for country music.
He was also a beloved figure both onstage and backstage at the Grand Ole Opry: His voice was an audience favorite,
and his humor and good-will backstage was a comfort to many performers.

Idol Spoiler: Upcoming Theme Weeks & Guests

Upcoming theme weeks for "American Idol" will include Michael Jackson week, Motown week and Grand Ole Opry week, according to the Idol blog votefortheworst.com.

Grand Ole Opry week includes only artists that are a member of the Grand Ole Opry (natch!) and the site says it has obtained a list of artists' songs that the contestants will choose from. The artists include Alan Jackson, Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks and more.

"American Idol" is about to get a double dose of star power: Kanye West and Kelly Clarkson.
The Grammy winners will share the stage as performers during Wednesday's elimination show.
West, making his first appearance on the top-rated Fox series, will perform his hit song "Heartless" from his latest album "808s & Heartbreak."

Clarkson, the original "American Idol," will sing her chart-topper "My Life Would Suck Without You," off her new album that drops Tuesday.

The show — a ratings juggernaut since it debuted in 2002 — has attracted numerous top artists as mentors and performers in recent seasons. Among them: Mariah Carey, Prince, Gwen Stefani, Dolly Parton and Jennifer Lopez.

2008 Most Requested Country Dance Songs

Alan Jackson's "Good Time" was the most requested and played country DANCE CLUB song last year, according to promotion company Marco Club Connection, which tracks clubs throughout the USA and Canada. Here are the Top 10 dance songs of 2008, according to a survey of more than 225 nightclubs and dance instructors;

Last Nights Show

Thanks to everyone who came out last night for karaoke at the Watertown VFW. We had non stop singers, and lots of fun, as usual.

The VFW held a 50/50 raffle as part of its fund raiser to help repair the roof. They plan on drawing every Karaoke Night. However... the winner last night was a girl who had already left.

Some of the performances last night were "Takin' Care Of Business" by Doc Pete, "Baby Girl" by Bobbie, "Pretty Woman" by Pat, "Marry For Money" by Jeff, and "Nobody" by Kathy. Also in the spotlight were Maggie, Peggy, Robert, Kirk, Deb, Dee, Pat B, Ginny, Don, and the one and only Lady DI (aka MaLady), to name a few.

Black River Last Night

Thanks to ALL who attended last nights show at the Black River American Legion. It was great fun.

It went very well, and there were a few new faces and voices! For the first time in a long time we had mostly all KARAOKE there.. as it is usally hard to get the singers up to perform. Last night we went non-stop.

Happy New Year!! January 3rd, 2009

We had a big turnout on New Years Eve! About 125 people attended the Watertown VFW for karaoke, dancing, drinking, and a good time.
There was lots of food which was brought in by those attending, and a good time was had by all. We had a steady rotation of singers, with many new voices.. but still managed to get a few dance numbers in for the party crowd.
At midnight we had a countdown and just about everyone was on the dance floor for “Auld Lang Signe” which was played after a fireworks and cheer to ring in 2009.

You Might Be A Karaoke Junkie... If..

You clap when a song finishes on the radio.

Strangers walk up to you in Wal-Mart and compliment you on your singing.

People you don’t know ask, “Aren’t you a karaoke singer?”

You hear a song on the radio and think, that’s number SC7503-10.

You go to a concert and wonder when they’re gonna call you up to sing.

You write lists like this on the back of karaoke slips.

Last call comes and you say, “But I’ve got another song yet to sing!”

You have laryngitis and you still try to sing.

Someone asks you if you have a slip, and they’re not talking about underwear!

You know the location of every karaoke bar within 50 miles of your house.

You would never consider dating someone with a bad voice.

You see karaoke on TV and you think, “That’s not the way it’s done!”

You actually know that karaoke means “empty orchestra.”

It feels weird to go to a new karaoke bar and not sit at the “regulars” table.

You get upset when someone else is sitting in your place.

You hate it when someone sings your song.

The word “rotation” no longer conjures up thoughts of tires or sex.

You think you sound better than the original.

The first thing you think when you hear a new song on the radio is, “When is this coming out on karaoke?”

You’re a woman but you’re still willing to sing the guys part.. or viseversa.
