Karaoke Weekend June 19th & 20th

Karaoke this weekend!! Both Friday and Saturday nights.

Come out on Friday, June 19th to the Watertown VFW on Bellew Ave for singing, fun and munchies.

The VFW is holding its Food Sale from 6-8, with hotdogs, burgers, frys, and hot sausage sandwiches. Karaoke will be from 7-11.

On Saturday, June 20, we will be at the Watertown American Legion on Sterling Street from 8-Midnight. It's always lots of fun there with dancing, singing and mingling.

We hope to see everyone out this weekend...

A Personal Message From Shania

Dear Friends, I am so excited to be writing to you personally again after so long. First I want to apologize for the delay in releasing new music. Music is the basis of our relationship, after all, and I realize I'm not holding up very well on my end of the relationship! But music has a mind of it's own, and is ruled by a writer's emotions and state of mind, not by a time frame or wishful thinking. I wish like crazy that I had new music by now since I dream of how fun it would be to see you all again out on tour with new songs to sing, but as most of you know, I have been side-tracked slightly over this past year.
The personal issues that took place just over a year ago have been well documented, and there’s no need to go into more detail here. Since then, I've been inspired by my pain to write and use writing as a therapy through the suffering. I truly wouldn't wish this on anybody as a means to get inspired, but it's been a productive period with so much emotion trying to find it's way out. However, there is no telling how long it will take me to actually finish these songs and record them so they can get out to you. As many things as there have been to write about through this difficult time in my life, healing is serious business and has taken a lot of the wind out of my sails, slowing me down at times. As you know, I am a mom and all my energy goes to making sure my little man is healthy and happy in every way. This is a full time job, as any parent understands, but especially difficult when you are battling your own personal crisis at the same time while trying to spare your child of being affected by your own suffering. One time when I was having a weak moment listening to some sad music and sobbing and slobbering over my computer’s keyboard, Eja walked up behind me and asked me why I was crying. He wasn't sad at first--just totally surprised to see his mom crying (he is seven and never saw me cry before), and didn't know what to make of it. During this intense period, I was managing to hide my devastation from Eja and cried only when I was alone; but this one time was just too hard for me to control and I broke down. I was quick on my feet to answer him though and told Eja that music was very powerful and can make people quite emotional. It can make you want to dance, feel angry, happy or sad and that THIS this song was sad and made me cry. He accepted this, hugged me and went back to what he was doing. Phew, that was tough! The energy it has taken me to deal with my personal life and managing to still be a responsible parent has been challenging, and while I have been putting what energy I have left at the end of each day into my writing, it's been hard to put it all together into song format. Please be patient and I will do my best to continue working on a finished album! Each morning I put my son on the school bus, feed our two dogs Sony and Dolly, drink my orange juice and sit down at the computer to write. I spend most of my time working with lyrics right now, sorting thoughts, expressions and concepts. It often comes out in the form of poetry, diary notes or e-mails to friends. My friends are great listeners and are very patient and generous about it. I often go back to my e-mails for song ideas. When I write in letter form, I don't hold back. I just write it as it comes without considering format, topic, manners, etc. Some of my best songwriting ideas are coming this way.Time has a way of making everything right, and it is my hope that good music will eventually come out of it. I say "good music” since I don't want to just throw anything at you, just for the sake of hurrying up to get it out. I want my new music to be something I'm personally satisfied with and proud to share with you. I have friends and family around constantly coaxing me to focus on my music. "Your fans miss you. They want new music. It's been too long." They're all dying for something new too, so they are pretty relentless about it! I know you certainly all do deserve new music and tour dates; not only because it's been so long, but also because of the HUGE support you've all given me during this period. The many blogs and e-mails have warmed my heart, strengthened my confidence, given me courage, and have often even made me laugh out loud…in a good way! I know I am not alone and realize through your support that you are all rooting for Eja and I, and our well-being. Thank you! The other day I started writing a few pages about being hungry as a kid. Some of it was painful to think about but it also made me laugh at the funny times. Reflecting on that period of my life, I realize how true it really is to learn to take the good with the bad. To appreciate that you can't have one without the other. The trick is to give the "good" at least as much of your energy as the "bad" and not to get stuck focusing more on the "bad". I decided to start writing about other stages of my life to help take my focus off the current phase I'm going through. When I'm feeling down, I figured changing my focus to write about other periods of my PAST would help pull me out of the sadness and on to new chapters in my life. It works.
I will sign off now but I look forward to my next letter/blog to you. I just wanted to fill you in a bit on what's going on with me and music, as well as extend my thanks for all of the support that you have given me over this last year and for all these years; and to assure you that I'm fine and managing very well, in fact. I'm enjoying my child, friends and family like I haven't in years, and it's great. I've been experiencing and seeing new things every day, living life with a different and more optimistic attitude. I've jumped out of an airplane at 10,000 feet, I'm riding Spanish and Arabian horses, traveling to exotic places, I've been deep sea diving for the first time! I pull the odd all-nighter, read more books, listen to Eja's favourite music with him, LOUD [ironically his favourite band is AC/DC] and basically I'm enjoying life.

Drunk Karaoke..

Friday Nights Show 6/5

Big thanks to everyone who came out on Friday night to the VFW for the Karaoke Show and HotDog Sale. It was a great night, and lots of fun. The VFW ran out of food before the orders could be filled, as they were not expecting so many to support the event.

We had plenty of great singers though... the highlights of the night included our cast of regulars and a few new voices as well. We heard Laura singing "The Climb," Doc Pete singing "I'm Just A Gigalo," Bobbie singing "Love Song," Diane singing "I Call You Mine," Pat singing "Sissy's Song," Deryk singing "Jump," Peggy singing "These Boots Are Made For Walking," Deb singing "You Ain't Woman Enough To Take My Man," Sam singing "Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town," Dee & Diane singing "Help Me Rhonda," Maggie singing "Goodbye Earl," Merianne & Pat singing "Who Says You Can't Go Home," and Sandra singing "Follow Me."

Ken & Dorah Bodah also celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary. They were married June 2, 1963. Merianne sang "Love Me Like You Used To" for them.

It was lots of fun as usual... hope to see everyone back on June 19th!

Friday 6/5 @ VFW Hall

Hope to see everybody this week at the Watertown VFW on Bellew Avenue for Karaoke from 7 til 11 PM. It should be lots of fun as usual...

The VFW is also holding a hotdog, hamburger & fry sale from 6-8 for those coming with an appetite for some nice summer food cooked out on the grill.

Singing Bee Gets Update

CMT has teamed up with The Gurin Company and JUMA Entertainment to produce 10 all-new one-hour episodes of the karaoke-style singing competition, The Singing Bee.
Hosted by comedic actress Melissa Peterman (Reba), it premieres June 20 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, following the second season premiere of the talent competition series, Can You Duet. Taped on location in Los Angeles, The Singing Bee tests contestants' knowledge of lyrics to well-known songs. Those who fail to accurately sing the correct lyrics are eliminated from the competition.
New to CMT, the show will blend a mix of 60 percent country music with 40 percent popular favorites from other genres. The popular show previously aired as a summer show on NBC. It is karaoke for television.

"Can You Duet" is the popular American Idol style show featuring country music DUET acts. The show is produced by Idols production team, but is taped at Nashville's Wild Horse Saloon.
Last years winners Caitlin & Will are having chart success with current releases on Columbia Records, and the second place duo, Joey and Rory had a big country hit with "Cheater Cheater."

Both shows will premiere on June 20. Check local listings for details.

Karaoke is for kids of all ages. Everyone loves to express themselves, and singing is the best way we know of.

Fridays Show at Black River

Another great night of singing and fun was had at the Black River Legion on Friday May 15.

Some of the song highlights included; Bobbie singing "Hang On Sloopy," Jeff singing "Against The Wind," and "People Are Crazy," Sandra singing "Baby, Baby," and "Old Time Rock & Roll," John singing "Can't Help Falling In Love," Rick singing "Spill The Wine," Lisa singing "Right Here Waiting For You," Patti singing "Bette Davis Eyes," Mark singing "Cats In The Cradle," and Maggie singing "It Happens."

Merianne sang "Could I Have This Dance," and also did a nice duet with Al, who is going back to Florida soon. He performed "Your Man," and "Quando Quando Quando."

Yours truly sang "My Blue Angel," and "She Can't Say That Anymore," and Don performed his Buddy Holly medley. We were also blessed with a very fun version of "The Little Girl" by Craig.

It was a good night and lots of fun. We hope to see everyone this coming weekend at the Watertown VFW on Friday and the Watertown Legion on Saturday night.

Last Nights Karaoke at the VFW

Another fun and festive night of karaoke was had last night, Friday May 8th at the Watertown VFW.

We had a pretty big crowd once again with many regulars and lots of new faces.. and voices.  We celebrated Diane’s birthday as well as my own, and the theme of the night was TEQUILA!

Some of the outstanding song performances of the night included; Erin singing “Say You Love Me,” Doc Pete singing “Knockin’ On Heavens Door,” Ginny singing “Let Your Love Flow,” Pat singing “Runaround Sue,” and “Love Me If You Can,” Lisa singing “You Needed Me,” Bob singing “Hard Headed Woman,” Deb singing “Teddy Bear Song,” Rosie singing “The Rose,” Nicole singing ”Please Mr. Please,” Peter singing “A Boy Named Sue,” Bobbie singing “Travelin’ Soldier,” Al singing “Quando, Quando, Quando,” Pat B singing “Long Black Train,” and Diane singing “Cheater Cheater.”

We also had several great duets and singalongs.. Bob & Lisa did a great performance of “Unforgettable,” and Diane sang “Proud Mary” with Dee, “I Need You” with her son Robert, “Don’t Fall In Love With A Dreamer” with Pat, and then had all the group up for a fun rendition of “Lean On Me.”

Thanks to all for the shots and cards, gifts, and well wishes.  I really appreciate it.  Special thanks to BOBBIE! 

Also would like to mention.. as I never have because they don’t sing, they only come to have fun and listen, Ken & Dora Bodah.  They have come to all the VFW shows in the last 2 years just to enjoy the karaoke performances.

I hope to see ya’ll next Friday at the Black River Legion or on May 22 back at the VFW.

"9 to 5" Opens on Broadway

The musical version of Dolly Partons "9 to 5" opened to rave reviews April 30th on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre. Telling the original story of three gals who take revenge on their boss, the musical version was written completely by Dolly, including all music and lyrics. Aside from the title tune, the show also includes "Backwoods Barbie" which was the title of Dollys last CD, and is her current single and video.

The show stars Emmy winner Allison Janney, Stephanie Block and Megan Hillty.

On May 1, the show received a record breaking 15 nominations from the Drama Desk Awards, the most ever for any show in one season. Those awards will be named on May 17th.

Vern Gosdin Dies at 74

Country singer Vern Gosdin, whose hit songs include classics like “Chiseled In Stone,” “Do You Believe Me Now” and “Set ‘em Up Joe,” died last night (4/28) in a Nashville hospital. He was 74. He had recently suffered a stroke.

Gosdin grew up in rural Woodland, Alabama, and, after a start in bluegrass on the west coast, forming the Gosdin Brothers with his brothers Rex and Ray. The band was there for the birth of country rock, and Gosdin went on to play with The Byrds’ Chris Hillman and Gene Clark.

Moving to Nashville in the late ‘70s, Gosdin quickly grew into one of country music’s very best honky tonk singers. Tammy Wynette referred to him as “the only other singer who can hold a candle to George Jones,” and he acquired the nickname, “The Voice.” In 1989, his recording of “Chiseled in Stone” was named the Country Music Association’s Song of the Year. His "I Can Tell By The Way You Dance," and "Way Down Deep" were both number one hits the following year.

What's your favorite kind of music? What song do you sing in the shower or in the car? What get's ya goin'?

Sometimes a certain song will come the radio and remind you of something special, or of a time that has meaning for you personally.. good or bad. When I sing in the shower it's normally an upbeat song from the 70's for some reason. Or I like to practice yodelling.. In the car or other times it depends on the mood or what comes on the radio at the time.

Last Nights Show at VFW

Another great night of fun and karaoke is complete!

A nice crowd showed up at the Watertown VFW once again for some singing, dancing, mingling, and a great time out.

Diane sang “Romeo” with Pat and also did a nice duet with Dee on “Barbara Ann.”

Hope everyone had a good time, and returns on May 8th.  It is Dianes birthday that day so she gets her title back as Lady Di.  Good luck to Merriane in VEGAS! Hope she has loads of fun.
