CMA Awards

The 44th Annual Country Music Association awards were presented last night, November 10th, in Nashville, TN. The show had some great musical moments, as well as few flops.

Reba McEntire performed her newest single, the 2008 Beyonce song "If I Were A Boy," which came across like a hot mess! Some other not so "great" performances were by Kenny Chesney, and the opening song by Carrie Underwood, which was barely audible.

The big winners of the night were Miranda Lambert, who won three awards including Female Vocalist, Best Album for "Revolution," and best single record for "The House That Built Me."

The complete list of winners are:
Best Song: "Need You Now" by Lady Antebellum
Best Single Record: "The House That Built Me" by Miranda Lambert
Best New Artist: The Zac Brown Band
Best Vocal Group: Lady Antebellum
Best Vocal Duo: Sugarland
Best Album: "Revolution" by Miranda Lambert
Best Male Vocalist: Blake Shelton
Best Female Vocalist: Miranda Lambert
Entertainer of the Year: Brad Paisley
Vocal Event: "Hillbilly Bone" by Blake Shelton & Trace Adkins

The show was hosted by Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley, who did a wonderful job. Their comedic timing was spot on.

Scary-Oke Karaoke Night News

We had a great time last night, Oct 29th, at the VFW for Scary-Oke. It started slow.. but we ended up with a big crowd after 9, and even stayed til almost 1AM.

There were lots of singers, and some great costumes. Photos will be posted as soon as my photographers send them.. LOL.

Best costume went to Erin for her cool Lady Gaga outfit, third place went to Christine for her scary Witch, and second prize was a tie for Tim and David. The VFW provided cash awards to the costume winners, as well as snacks for the crowd.

Some of our singers included Ginny, Pat, Deb, Kathy, David, George, Penny, Mel, Christine, Wayne, Betty, Taylor, Erin, Snooki, Patty, Julia, and Cecil.

Mel brought the house down with her rockin' rendition of "Me & Bobby McGee".. she was channeling Janis Joplin. A big crowd favorite was Kathy & Ginny doing "Monster Mash," and Taylor & Erin singing "Stuck Like Glue."

Blake Shelton to be Inducted into Opry

Grand Ole Opry | Blake Shelton's Induction

The Grand Ole Opry made a historic invitation on September 28, and the 85-year-old radio show did it the modern way: by Twitter.

After performing "Hillbilly Bone" with Trace Adkins, tweetin' fool Blake Shelton was told he'd just received an important message via Twitter. A screen at the back of the stage displayed the note from @opry: " @blakeshelton, you're invited to join the Grand Ole Opry. See you on 10/23/2010!"

With that 69-character invitation, Blake became the first new member added to the cast since Montgomery Gentry joined the Opry family 15 months ago. He gave an ecstatic hug to Trace, then a figurative tip of the hat to the crowd.

"Man, it takes a long time!" he exclaimed. "I know a lot of guys that want this just as bad as I wanted it and, uh, forget them!"

11 Karaoke Songs No One Wants To Hear
A panel of experts offered 25 NEW tips for fail safe singing situations, including karaoke. Beyond their advice, someone who steps up to the mic at a karaoke bar should start with picking a song people actually want to hear, and one that they already know. One note is to remember that you are in a club full of people who are there to have FUN. Ballads are a big no-no, as well as show tunes, and these tunes, which will have people scrambling to the door faster than Last Call!

  • "Picture" by Kid Rock & Sheryl Crow
  • "American Pie" by Don McLean
  • "Summer Nights" from GREASE
  • "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" by Meatloaf

Taylor Swift Awarded

Taylor Swift’s six-times-Platinum album, Fearless was officially recognized as the Most Awarded Album in the History of Country Music last night at a private dinner in Nashville. Fearless is the only album in history to win the all-genre Album of The Year Grammy, plus Country Album of the Year Awards from the Grammys, the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music and the American Music Awards.

Representatives from NARAS, The American Music Awards, The Country Music Association, and the Academy of Country Music all joined Big Machine Records Group President/CEO Scott Borchetta in honoring Swift for her achievement. Other speakers praising Swift included her producer Nathan Chapman, BMI’s Jody Williams, SonyATV Music’s Terry Wakefield, ole’s Gilles Godard and MusicRow Publisher David Ross. Wakefield noted his boss Troy Tomlinson was on vacation, but desperately wanted to attend this party, so Wakefield brought a life-size cardboard cutout of the publisher. Swift later thanked everyone saying, “I never expected I would get to stand up at awards shows as much as I have. I’m proud of the people this happened to along with me. We’ve all had a lot change for us. I’ve seen a lot of you get new cars, but other than that you’re the same people.”

“We tend to always look forward when it comes to Taylor, but tonight it was time to stop for a moment and look back on one of the most successful music works of all time,” said Borchetta of the historic evening. “The eighteen months of our lives known as the ‘Fearless‘ era have been history-making, euphoric and triumphant. The sales, the airplay, the accolades and the awards have all just been incredible. But most important to me is that my friend Taylor and her collective team of family, record label, management and her road family continue to raise the bar with work ethic, achievement and enjoyment. Dreams do come true.”

Fridays Show @ The VFW

Friday Night, Feb, 26, 2010, at the Watertown VFW was another great show. We had a very big crowd with lots of singers. There was a rotation of 25 singers, and about 65-70 people in attendance throughout the night. It was nice to see so many returning fans and those who joined us for the first time.

We had performances from Cecil, Don, Tammy, Lisa, Bob, Patty, George, David, David Z, Diane, Jeff, Pat, Maggie, Deb, Dee, Bobbie, Doc Pete, Ginny, Deryk, Adam, Erin, Hazel, Andy, Rob, Nicole, Jim, and myself.

Of course, there were a few duets performed as well, but the rotation of singers was so long it was hard getting in every one's requests. Still, we had nice versions of "American Soldier" by Andy, "The Rose" by Hazel, "All My Ex's Live in In Texas" by Jim, "A Lesson In Leavin'" by Ginny, and "When I Call Your Name" by Deb & Jeff, among many others...

We had three birthday celebrations on Friday. Betty and Jeff both had their birthdays, and Deryk was happy he made it to 21!! Congratulations to them all. Thanks to Bobbie who made peanut butter cookies and gifts for them all.

Cecil did his regular job of taking photo's thru the night, and captured some great shots of our great friends and singers. To see all of the pictures, please visit our main web page at TGIK.

I hope to see everyone next time at the VFW on March 12th, for more fun!!

2010 Country Music Hall of Fame Winners

Don Williams, Jimmy Dean, Ferlin Husky and record producer Billy Sherrill are the latest additions to the Country Music Hall of Fame. The Country Music Association announced the honor Tuesday via press release, with a formal induction ceremony promised later this year.

“I thought I was already in there!” Jimmy joked. “Seriously, it brought a huge grin to my face. I am honored.”

Each of the four has contributed significantly to the genre. Jimmy, whose name is synonymous with a line of sausage, gave country music plenty of TV exposure as the host of several different programs, most notably “The Jimmy Dean Show,” a 1960s ABC variety series. He often featured the likes of Roger Miller, Buck Owens or Faron Young. One 1964 episode aired live from the Grand Ole Opry, while a 1965 installment captured Eddy Arnold’s recording session for “Make The World Go Away.” The CMA also used “The Jimmy Dean Show” as a vehicle to announce the Hall of Fame inductees in 1966. As a recording artist, Jimmy is best known for “Big Bad John,” a recitation about a coal-mining accident that sold a million copies after crossing into the pop charts.

Ferlin’s hit “Gone” is often credited as the first example of “the Nashville Sound,” a recording approach that softened hillbilly twang in favor of string sections and/or lilting background singers. His “Wings Of A Dove,” which spent a whopping 10 weeks at No. 1 in 1960, has become a gospel standard. Ferlin has been hospitalized numerous time with heart problems — most recently in July — but has become a symbol of both faith and persistence.

“I’d like to thank my Lord Jesus Christ for dying for me, saving my soul and bringing me into the world as a country boy,” Ferlin said. “And also for giving me the talent to sing, entertain and help convert millions around the world to country music. I’m still a country boy and proud of it. In the words of my close friend, the late Stringbean, ‘I sure am glad I’m me!’”

Don is the most recent hitmaker of this year’s crew, having last occupied a Top 10 slot in 1991. He routinely couched his rich, masculine vocals in understated productions, putting the focus of his work squarely on the material he selected. And those songs were inevitably intelligent and mature, including the crossover ballad “I Believe In You,” the roots-aware “Tulsa Time” and the tale of a Southern man’s self-acceptance, “Good Ole Boys Like Me.” Don went into retirement following a 2006 tour, though he is still revered among the current generation of stars. Keith Urban has repeatedly cited Don as an influence, and Josh Turner — who duetted with the Gentle Giant in his final Nashville concert — included a remake of Don’s hit “I Wouldn’t Be A Man” on the new Haywire album.

“It is unbelievable,” Don said, “that CMA thought about me in this manner.”

Billy Sherrill might not be a household name, but he enters the Hall for his work behind the scenes as a record producer, songwriter and executive. He produced such hits as George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” David Allan Coe’s “The Ride” and Johnny Paycheck’s “Take This Job And Shove It.” He also wrote or co-wrote Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man,” Charlie Rich’s “The Most Beautiful Girl,” David Houston’s “Almost Persuaded” and Keith Whitley’s “Ten Feet Away.”

“Anything I have ever accomplished,” Billy said, “would have been totally impossible without the help and support of the greatest songwriters and musicians in the world — and, of course, what I stole from [producer] Owen Bradley!”

The new members bring the total number of Hall of Famers to 112. They will be enshrined in the Hall of Fame’s Rotunda with bronze plaques alongside such fellow inductees as Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson.

Fridays Show @ Black River Legion

Friday nights show at the Black River Legion, Feb, 19, was lots of fun. We only have a handful of singers, but lots of dancers and listeners. It turned into a great evening of karaoke.

We heard songs from Patti, Don, Doc Pete, Rob, John, Rick, Bobbie, Big D, Karen, and a few others... the dancers really got into Bobbie singing "Pokerface," and Cecil performing "Tik Tok." As well as Rick doing "Knockin' On Heaven's Door."

We were experimenting with a new system, so it was tweaking all night until we finally got the sound set perfectly. Luckily, ev
eryone sounded awesome, and the show turned out to be great!

Hope to see everybody next Friday at the Watertown VFW for more fun!!

Fridays Show at the VFW

Happy Valentines Day to everyone!! We had a great time at the Watertown VFW on Friday Night, February 12th.

It turned out to be a very good night, with about 60 people in attendance for the karaoke and entertainment. So many returning guests and lots of new people, made the night loads of fun, and super busy. The night just flew by. Seemed like we just got started and the crowd was wound up and it was time to end the show.

With songs performed by Steve, Lisa, Don, Cecil, Bobbie, Dave, George, Ryan, Ginny, Brian, Carlton, Mark, Sabrina, Mary, Doc Pete, Bob, Pat & Donna, and Heather, it was a full rotation from start to finish. We ended up staying a little longer than normal to fit everyone in.

George Bensor was celebrating his 56th birthday, and performed "Good Gollly Miss Molly" for the crowd. Ginny finally returned and gave us a beautiful rendition of "Help Me Make It Through The Night," and Mark & Sabrina did their famous version of "I Got You Babe."

Hope to see everyone back at the VFW on Feb. 27th, and next week, Feb. 19th, at the Black River Legion.

2010 Grammy Winners

The 2010 Grammy Awards were telecast last night on CBS. The show was amazing as far as the performances, but lacking in actual "awards." The show decided to give most of the trophies pre-show, with only the major categories being telecast, leaving more time for the performances.. which ended up running 40 minutes over time anyway.
Grammy Winners 2010 List
Pink gave the performance of the night with her magnificent vocals and beautiful gymnastics, hanging from the ceiling by a scarf. Beyonce took down the house with her rocking number, and Lady Gaga & Elton John killed it. The Zac Brown Band did a fantastic job with their medley, and tho she was lacking in vocals... Taylor Swift brought on Stevie Nicks for a duet version of their songs. Swift proved that she is no match for the vocals of the other female chart toppers, and if not saved by Nicks, the performance would have been the "bomb" of the night. However, that was saved for "Blame It" by Jamie Foxx.

Here are some of the major winners:
Best Album - Taylor Swift "Fearless"
Female Pop Performance - Beyonce "Halo"
Rock Album - Green day "21st Century Breakdown"
Record of the Year - Kings Of Leon "Use Somebody"
New Artist - Zac Brown Band
Country Album - Taylor Swift "Fearless"
Song of the Year - Beyonce "Single Ladies"
Male Pop Performance - Jason Mraz "Make It Mine
Male Country Performance - Keith Urban "Sweet Thing"
Dance Record - Lady Gaga "Poker Face"

Courtney Love Gets Vocal Coach

COURTNEY LOVE TURNED TO COACH TO FIX 'TERRIBLE' SINGING

LOVE was so embarrassed by her "terrible singing" on a leaked HOLE recording, she hired a vocal coach.
The rocker was left red-faced after an early version of Nobody's Daughter, the title track from the band's upcoming album, leaked on the ne
t and was ridiculed by fans.
Love admits she then recruited a voice expert - and insists her singing skills returned in just three sessions.
She tells Britain's NME magazine, "(On) the song Nobody's Daughter, the one that went out on the internet, my singing was so terrible, I couldn't sing on pitch. So I found this vocal coach who taught me what my hard palette and my soft palette meant. He's Bono and PJ Harvey's vocal coach. I didn't even need to go to him more than three to four times. He gave me my voice back. I can f**king sing Violet three times in a row, and I couldn't do that in L.A.
"I cut down on smoking... well, not so much, I still smoke, I cut down a little bit on it and he told me what you're doing with your larynx when you smoke, which is you're frying it basically, and unless I want to sound like Marianne (Faithful)... as much as I love her, I don't want to sound like her every day."

Idol Contestant Booted

The new season of American Idol is still young, but we already have some controversy to drool over.

An Idol contestant, Michael Lynche aka Big Mike, was reportedly given the boot by show producers after his father revealed in an interview with the St. Petersburg Times that he had made the Top 24. Speaking about a contestant’s status before an episode airs in a violation of Idol’s confidentiality rules. Reports state that the father also told the news who the other finalists were.

According to The New York Post, via American Idol-related blog Joe’s Place, Lynche has already been replaced.

This would be the second year in a row we’ve lost a contestant in the semi-finals stage. Last year, Joanna Pacitti was disqualified after it was discovered she had a “close relationship” with two 19 Entertainment — the studio which produces Idol

Last Nights Show @ VFW

Well... it turned out to be a very fun and busy night for us at the Watertown VFW last night, Jan. 22. We ended up playing a little longer because the time just went by so fast with everyone having such a great time.

With about 55-65 people in attendance, we had around 16 singers throughout the night, and it seemed like everyone was enjoying themselves.

We had a nice gathering for Dora Bodah, who celebrated her birthday with TGIK. I think she said she was turning 35.. but that is her story. A lot of dancing and partying was had by everyone, and it seemed like everyone was really getting into the fun.

A lot of new voices and faces, and a lot of familiar friends showed up.. It was good to see Corrina out on the dance floor once again. LOL. The dance floor just was not the same without her there, and she really tore it up last night!

Of course, we had lots of singing too... We heard great songs from Pat, Tom, Rob, Christine, Jeff, Doc Pete, The Chicks, Liz, Danielle, Travis, Don, and a few others. Then we had, all the way from the Miami Municipal Auditorium, Diane... who performed a great hit, "My Baby Loves Me," and direct from her world tour, Nicole, who did a beautiful rendition of "Please Mr Please."

And also, all the way from Madison Square Garden we had Cecil, who sang his heart out on a new song, "Tik Tok."

It was hard keeping the dancers happy, but we managed to get in "Poker Face," "The Cupid Shuffle," and "The Cha-Cha Slide." Nobody scooted out the door and into traffic, so it was a pretty good party.

For all 24 of the pictures from the show, please visit the TGIK web site at http://www.thank-god-its-karaoke.com and look under PHOTOS 1.

Hope to see everyone back again at the VFW on Feb. 12!!
