Courtney Love Gets Vocal Coach

COURTNEY LOVE TURNED TO COACH TO FIX 'TERRIBLE' SINGING

LOVE was so embarrassed by her "terrible singing" on a leaked HOLE recording, she hired a vocal coach.
The rocker was left red-faced after an early version of Nobody's Daughter, the title track from the band's upcoming album, leaked on the ne
t and was ridiculed by fans.
Love admits she then recruited a voice expert - and insists her singing skills returned in just three sessions.
She tells Britain's NME magazine, "(On) the song Nobody's Daughter, the one that went out on the internet, my singing was so terrible, I couldn't sing on pitch. So I found this vocal coach who taught me what my hard palette and my soft palette meant. He's Bono and PJ Harvey's vocal coach. I didn't even need to go to him more than three to four times. He gave me my voice back. I can f**king sing Violet three times in a row, and I couldn't do that in L.A.
"I cut down on smoking... well, not so much, I still smoke, I cut down a little bit on it and he told me what you're doing with your larynx when you smoke, which is you're frying it basically, and unless I want to sound like Marianne (Faithful)... as much as I love her, I don't want to sound like her every day."

Idol Contestant Booted

The new season of American Idol is still young, but we already have some controversy to drool over.

An Idol contestant, Michael Lynche aka Big Mike, was reportedly given the boot by show producers after his father revealed in an interview with the St. Petersburg Times that he had made the Top 24. Speaking about a contestant’s status before an episode airs in a violation of Idol’s confidentiality rules. Reports state that the father also told the news who the other finalists were.

According to The New York Post, via American Idol-related blog Joe’s Place, Lynche has already been replaced.

This would be the second year in a row we’ve lost a contestant in the semi-finals stage. Last year, Joanna Pacitti was disqualified after it was discovered she had a “close relationship” with two 19 Entertainment — the studio which produces Idol

Last Nights Show @ VFW

Well... it turned out to be a very fun and busy night for us at the Watertown VFW last night, Jan. 22. We ended up playing a little longer because the time just went by so fast with everyone having such a great time.

With about 55-65 people in attendance, we had around 16 singers throughout the night, and it seemed like everyone was enjoying themselves.

We had a nice gathering for Dora Bodah, who celebrated her birthday with TGIK. I think she said she was turning 35.. but that is her story. A lot of dancing and partying was had by everyone, and it seemed like everyone was really getting into the fun.

A lot of new voices and faces, and a lot of familiar friends showed up.. It was good to see Corrina out on the dance floor once again. LOL. The dance floor just was not the same without her there, and she really tore it up last night!

Of course, we had lots of singing too... We heard great songs from Pat, Tom, Rob, Christine, Jeff, Doc Pete, The Chicks, Liz, Danielle, Travis, Don, and a few others. Then we had, all the way from the Miami Municipal Auditorium, Diane... who performed a great hit, "My Baby Loves Me," and direct from her world tour, Nicole, who did a beautiful rendition of "Please Mr Please."

And also, all the way from Madison Square Garden we had Cecil, who sang his heart out on a new song, "Tik Tok."

It was hard keeping the dancers happy, but we managed to get in "Poker Face," "The Cupid Shuffle," and "The Cha-Cha Slide." Nobody scooted out the door and into traffic, so it was a pretty good party.

For all 24 of the pictures from the show, please visit the TGIK web site at http://www.thank-god-its-karaoke.com and look under PHOTOS 1.

Hope to see everyone back again at the VFW on Feb. 12!!

Is Dolly The Next Simon?

According to celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, at PerezHilton.com, the powers over FOX TV's "American Idol" are touting a few names around already as a possible replacement to judge Simon Cowell, who will leave the hit show after this season to start up the US version of his big Brithish show, "The X Factor."

The day that new judge Ellen DeGeneres began her stint, Cowell announced his departure from the show, which made some wonder if Ellen was set up to be the shows king pin. However, several sources say that Idol is in preliminary talks with several people as potential judges. Among those at the top of the list are country superstar Dolly Parton, musical legend, Elton John, and LaToya Jackson.

In a side note... Simon Cowell has let it slip that one of the possible judges on "The X Factor" will be Paula Abdul, who left Idol after last season over contract disputes.

Fridays Show at Black River Legion

Last Friday night, Jan. 15th, at the Black River Legion was a lot of fun. We had a very good time there for a change, and the crowd was very large. It turned out really nice, just wish the bar would get a few more tables to accommodate the crowds.

We had about 16 singers throughout the night... some familiar voices and some brand new ones. We heard songs from Rick, Pat, Diane, Jeff, another Jeff, Maggie, Cecil, Tom, Doc Pete, Louise, Don, Kerry, Bobbie, Shawn, John C., and a few others. The songs ranged from country to hard rock, and everything in between. We got a whole slew of dancers up for "The Cupid Shuffle."

Some of our singers were really enjoying themselves.. We know Maggie can't handle her amaretto very well, as her glass seems to slide out of her hands.. LOL. Jeff was in rare form as well.

Hope to see everyone this coming Friday at the Watertown VFW for more fun!

Daughtry - Poker Face Cover

Chris Daughtry doing a cover of Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" for a German radio station. The song should be a single release... it's better than the original version.

Larry Platt - Pants On The Ground

From the American Idol auditions.. this is 62 year old Larry Platt with his song "Pants On The Ground," that is sweeping the country.

How To Use A Microphone

How To Properly Use A Karaoke Microphone

Avoid sounding distorted or muffled when you sing!! Learn to use the microphone to make you sound better - use our microphone tips and techniques!

1. If using a microphone stand make sure it is at a comfortable height for you to sing into before starting - mucking about with it during a song will be distracting to you and the audience.

2. When using a microphone with a lead attached, ensure that the lead is firmly attached to the microphone and you are not standing on the loose cable.

3. Check the on/off switch! Some mics have a small switch which moves easily - this can be turned off by accident when you grip the microphone or the previous singer may have turned it off without the KJ's knowledge. Do NOT tap on the microphone to see if it is on, this can blow the sensors.

4. Hold the microphone by the handle, don't cover the pickup with your hand or fingers and keep the microphone at a distance of 1/2" - 1" away from your mouth - holding it too close to your mouth or covering the pickup causes your voice and the words to sound muffled, distorted and indistinct, and cause squealing feedback.

5. If you have a particularly quiet singing voice ask the KJ to turn the microphone up for you - a good operator will do this automatically when you start to sing.

6. Don't shout! The microphone is sensitive - if you have a loud voice or need to increase your vocal volume for a certain track section or song, move the mic away from your mouth until your singing sounds clear and easy to understand.

7. Avoid pointing the microphone towards the speakers or monitors - this creates a horrible high pitched sound called 'feedback'. This can cause the speakers to burn out.

8. To avoid 'popping' sounds when singing words containing 'B', 'P' or 'S' hold the microphone slightly to the side instead of directly to the front of your mouth.

9. When singing a long powerful note move the microphone away from your mouth during the loud notes and gradually bring it back towards you as you start to run out of breath and the notes volume decreases - this makes the notes volume sound more consistent.

10. Don't swing or drop the microphone, tug, pull the cable or move further than the microphone cables natural length or you may cause damage to the equipment - you bust it you pay for it (& it's expensive)!! If using a cordless mic, handle with extra care when returning it to the holder.

There are two types of microphone commonly used in live performance:

1. Directional - sing directly into the pick up - mainly used for solo singers.
2. Omni-Directional - picks up sound from anywhere within its radius.

New Years Eve PICS

Hey Everyone!! The pictures from last nights New Years Karaoke Party at the VFW are uploaded... Big thanks to all who came out and partied with us. It was loads of fun!!

The crowd was smaller than expected, but everyone had a fantastic time. There was a whole ton of food and nobody went home hungry. The decorations were awesome, and the balloon drop at midnight was really neat!

There was lots of dancing and singing.. and a little bit of drinking too! The bar was packed a few times and Patti did a great job seeing to it that drinks were served.

Big thanks to Cecil and Bobbie for help decorating, prizes, and taking the pictures.

I don't remember singing but I'm told I did... but I do recall hearing songs done by Maggie, Donnie, Jeff, Bobbie, Penny, Charmaine, Christine, Cecil, and then I lost track... LOL.
The pictures are uploaded to the main website under PHOTOS 2 at
